Modern Slavery Policy

Modern slavery is a crime that involves the exploitation of people for profit. It can take many forms, including forced labour, human trafficking, and forced marriage. The UK has several laws and policies in place to combat modern slavery, including the Modern Slavery Act 2015.

The Modern Slavery Act is a landmark piece of legislation that criminalises modern slavery and human trafficking. It also requires certain organisations to publish a slavery and human trafficking statement each year. This statement must set out the organisation’s policies and procedures for preventing and identifying modern slavery in its supply chains.

The Modern Slavery Act has been praised for its comprehensive approach to tackling modern slavery. However, it has also been criticised for being too complex and for not going far enough to protect victims.

In addition to the Modern Slavery Act, the UK also has several other laws and policies that are relevant to modern slavery. These include the Immigration Act 2016, and the Modern Slavery Strategy 2017-2022.

The Immigration Act 2016 makes it a criminal offense to facilitate the travel of someone for the purpose of exploitation. The Modern Slavery Strategy sets out the UK government’s priorities for tackling modern slavery.

The UK government has also taken several other steps to combat modern slavery. These include:

  • Setting up the Modern Slavery Human Trafficking Commissioner’s Office
  • Investing in awareness-raising campaigns
  • Working with businesses to improve their anti-slavery practices

The UK Modern Slavery Act 2015 requires certain commercial organisations to publish an annual statement setting out the steps they take to prevent modern slavery in their business and their supply chains. This is known as a modern slavery statement.

The organisations that are required to publish a modern slavery statement are those that:

  • Have a turnover of more than £36 million
  • Are incorporated in the UK
  • Carry on a business in the UK

The modern slavery statement must be published within six months of the end of the organisation’s financial year. It must be accessible to the public on the organisation’s website or by other means.

The modern slavery statement should include the following information:

  • The organisation’s policy on modern slavery
  • The steps the organisation has taken to prevent modern slavery in its business and supply chains
  • The risks of modern slavery that the organisation has identified
  • The measures the organisation has put in place to mitigate these risks
  • The outcomes of the organisation’s modern slavery risk assessment

The modern slavery statement should be signed by a senior member of the organisation’s management team.

By taking these steps, organisations can help to ensure that they are not complicit in modern slavery.

  • Conducting due diligence on suppliers
  • Training employees on modern slavery
  • Implementing whistleblowing procedures
  • Working with other organisations to combat modern slavery

By taking these steps, organisations can help to ensure that they are not complicit in modern slavery. In addition to the legal requirements, there are several reasons why organisations, including those that do not meet the threshold requirements in terms of turnover, should develop a modern slavery policy. These include:

  • To protect their reputation: A modern slavery scandal can damage an organisation’s reputation and make it more difficult to do business.
  • To comply with international standards: Many countries have laws or regulations that require organisations to take steps to prevent modern slavery.
  • To attract and retain talent: Employees are increasingly looking for employers that are committed to social responsibility.
  • To reduce risk: Modern slavery can lead to legal liability, financial losses, and reputational damage.

By developing a modern slavery policy, organisations can demonstrate their commitment to ethical business practices and help to create a more just and equitable world.

“I would like to say the service from Anthony was excellent. Whilst I see people, including my co-defendants getting frustrated with their legal team (ie. not being able to contact them and not getting questions answered), I have had a great service and was always satisfied from start to finish.”

“From the day we appointed Tim and his team, the communication with us was outstanding, always at the end of the phone or email, more than often outside office hours, with a fantastic level of knowledge.”

“I am really happy with and grateful for the service Stephen have rendered, which I think has been of high quality. Stephen's advice and insights have always been clear and with my best interests in mind. There are very few professionals I have worked with in either my business or personal life who have been as consistent as Stephen has at doing what he promised, at the time he promised it.”
